It happened all of a sudden! Dev Anand had been toying with the idea of casting Shabana Azmi in the role of Sanjeevani Kutty, the then R.O. of Central Board of Film Certification, in his latest film CENSOR. Actually, this is the second most important role in the film, after Dev Anands, and the veteran film-maker wanted only an accomplished performer for it. But fate had something else in store for him. A chance meeting with Rekha at an awards function and Dev decided to cast her in the said role. It seems, Rekha joked the moment she saw Dev-saab, "I believe, you've signed half the industry for the film. But why have you ignored me?" That was it! Dev said 'Yes, we will work this time' that very minute and drove straight to his office and started working on the role. The very next day, he called the actress and reminded her of the statement she made at the function. Rekha did not go back on her words, but her only condition was that she could spare five days only. "I took it up as a challenge and started working on the shot divisions. When I look back, her performance does not give the feeling that we had to meet a deadline," Dev-saab says. That indeed is true, for Rekha is sure to walk away with taalis when people see the film.
