Ira Khan, the daughter of actor Aamir Khan, previously shared her personal struggle with depression through a series of social media posts a few years ago. She revealed that she had been diagnosed with clinical depression more than five years ago. Recently, Ira spoke about the support she received from her father Aamir and disclosed that her family has a history of mental health issues.
In a recent endeavour to offer mental health support, Ira initiated the Agastu foundation. During an interview with The Times of India, she mentioned that her father Aamir and her mother Reena Dutta serve on the foundation's advisory board. Ira expressed her gratitude for Aamir's assistance in establishing the foundation and securing the necessary funding. During an interview with TOI, Ira shared that she became aware of changes in her mental health when she found herself crying for extended periods of eight hours and sleeping for ten hours each day. Consequently, she made the decision to return from the Netherlands, where she was studying, and come back to India. She said, “My mom pointed out that I didn’t want to be alive so I would just sleep my day away so that I would have fewer hours to live in a day.” She further added, “I didn't tell anyone because they would be worried about me. This period was one-and-a-half years. Then I stopped eating food for four days.”
Ira clarifies that her condition is not anxiety but rather cyclic depression, which resurfaces periodically in phases. She further mentions that she is still undergoing medication for her condition. “Every 8-10 months I will have a big crash. It’s partly genetic, partly psychological, and partly social. It took me a while to figure it out. But I have mental health disorders in my family. I also did not make healthy choices and I systematically walked into depression. I had a very big dip in July last year. I had stopped taking my medication and also put on a lot of weight. I developed a mental block against working out,” said Ira.
Ira is the second child of Aamir Khan and his former wife, Reena Dutta. She has an older brother named Junaid. Aamir and Reena divorced in 2002. Subsequently, Aamir married Kiran Rao, and they had a son named Azad. However, in 2021, Aamir and Kiran publicly announced their separation.
On the work front, Aamir was last seen in Laal Singh Chadha, Aamir Khan is gearing up to work on the Hindi remake of the Spanish film Campeones. However, this time he will not be in front of the camera but will take on the role of a producer for the movie. As per reports, the actor is in talks with Rajkumar Hirani for a biopic.
