The trailer of the action entertainer Bhaiyya Ji was launched in Mumbai in the presence of the star cast and other unit members. The film is special not just because it is the 100th movie of Manoj Bajpayee but also because the actor has never portrayed such a mass role before.
Manoj Bajpayee was asked if he was offered such a part before. The actor replied, “No. I’ll be honest. Apoorv Singh Karki was the first director to offer me such a role.”
He, however, added, “But the roles that were offered to me in commercial roles were for the second lead or the villain. I did a film, Tevar (2015). It didn’t work… I acted in Satyameva Jayate (2018) and Baaghi 2 (2018). Those films worked big time. But in filmon ke saath jo kahaniyaan aati hai, mujhe unse samsya rahi hai.”
Manoj Bajpayee explained, “In our mainstream cinema, the biggest issue is that woh hamari kahani nahin keh raha. Hamare samaj ki kahani nahin keh raha hai. The heroes don’t come from our culture, small towns or villages. This was prevalent in the 60s and 70s.”
He continued, “As a result, we lost touch with the aam aadmi as they couldn’t identify with the hero on screen. Hence, it’s important to make films that are culturally very rooted. Bhaiyya Ji is one such film. The writers and makers have not compromised on depicting the culture and relationship between the characters in the film. Be it the bond between the sons and stepmother or the bond between the characters in my circle, it’s a reflection of how things are in the villages. I used to miss these aspects and hence, I couldn’t do too many of such films.”
Bhaiyya Ji also stars Suvinder Vicky, Jatin Goswami, Vipin Sharma and Zoya Hussain and it releases in cinemas on May 24.
