National Awards throw Queen team into a sulk

en Bollywood News National Awards throw Queen team into a sulk

Although Kangna Ranaut has rightfully walked away with the National award as Best Actress for her performance as the Delhi girl on a solo honeymoon after being deserted by her fiance on the eve of their wedding, the rest of the Queen team was in for a disappointment, especially director Vikas Bahl who lost the best director award to the Bengali auteur director Srijit Mukherjee who won the best director award for Chatuskhon.

Srijit admits he was "pleasantly surprised" by the win considering Queen was such a popular film. "It is a rare honour and I am totally overwhelmed," says Srijit.

It may be mentioned here that last year, Queen was embroiled in a plagiarism controversy when it was alleged that the film's theme was suspiciously similar to Parvati Balagopalan's unsung film Phir Zindagi.

Srijit's Bangla film Chatushkon stars Aparna Sen, Goutam Ghose, Chiranjeet Chakraborty and Parambrata Chatterjee as four filmmakers who discover some bitter truth about themselves as they shoot a film. The film was originally supposed to star Rituparno Ghosh and Anjan Dutt. But one passed away and the other opted out.

Says Srijit, "I wanted to sign four prominent directors as directors making a segmented film like Bombay Talkies. I signed Rituparno Ghosh and Anjan Dutt along with Aparna Sen and Goutam Ghose, as all four are actors and directors. Then Rituda passed away. I signed Kaushik Ganguly for his role. Kaushik couldn't give dates. So finally Parambrata Chatterjee who is also an actor-director is cast in the role originally meant for Rituda. When Anjan Dutt opted out I signed Chiranjeet for his role."

Omang Kumar whose Mary Kom won the National award for Best wholesome entertainment was over the moon. "I am floating right now. It is the most incredible feeling anyone can ever get. It was my directorial debut and I have won a National award for it! I couldn't ask for anything more."

Kangna Ranaut was shooting in Haryana for Tanu Weds Manu 2 when the announcement was made. According to her director Aanand L. Rai, Kangna was happy but not overjoyed. This was her second National award after the one she received for Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion.

Kangna also received all the popular awards of 2014 for her performance in Queen. She refused to attend the awards functions as she believes the popular awards are not honestly given and actors receiving awards are forced to attend the function.

But she will proudly go to Delhi to get her National award.

Incidentally, Kangna turned a year older a day before the National award was announced. "What a lovely birthday gift! Kangna is a very emotional girl. Ussko pyar se jeet sakte ho. She won't be cowed down by any bullying tactics," says Aanand Rai.
