Good Bye 2000:

The year 2000 will go down in the annals of Hindi cinema as the worst year. Worst, because the film industry in Mumbai saw the mightiest of films biting the dust. Films that were expected to take the nation by storm came and went without even a whimper. The year saw 230 films releasing in the calendar year, which is a record of sorts. For, never before has any year witnessed 230 releases ever. But the number of flops in the year 2000 was also a record breaker. You’ll be surprised to know that 90% of films flopped at the turnstiles, most of them not managing even a face-saving opening. What could be the reason behind the alarming ratio of flops? Just one factor Film scripts. With film-makers concentrating on enhancing the look of the film by way of production values and outdoor locations, the department that took a backseat was film scripts. To state that predictability ruled the roost, would be an understatement. Most Hindi films had nothing new to offer, which is why they were rejected outright. The year 2000 also witnessed well-made love stories being patronised by families in a big way. The three biggest hits of the year KAHO NAA PYAAR HAI, MOHABBATEIN and KYA KEHNA! were all love stories. Not that action flicks were rejected outright. But the paying public was not too excited watching blood and gore on screen. A wide section of people are of the opinion that with so much frustration and misery in everyday life, the common man is more inclined towards romance and music, which explains why love stories called the shots in 2000.
