I’ve tasted blood

Ramgopal Varma is in a jubilant mood, what with SARKAR proving a success at the box-office. The maverick film-maker has every reason to celebrate and celebrate he did by throwing a lavish party at J.W. Marriott, Juhu on Monday, July 25. RGV always speaks with conviction and his brief but motivating speech on the occasion confirmed the fact that the film-maker has decided to work with the Bachchans in his forthcoming projects. Some vignettes from RGV’s straight-from-the-heart speech: I used to stand in queues to buy tickets for an Amitabh Bachchan film and today, I’ve had the privilege of directing the biggest star of the country. If people feel that Mr. Bachchan has delivered one of the finest performances of his career in SARKAR, I feel doubly honoured. I’ve tasted blood. Once you work with Amitabh Bachchan, it’s difficult to work with anyone else. As far as Abhishek goes, I am an ardent fan of his. When I called him the new superstar [in the promos of SARKAR], a few people raised eyebrows. I say, why not? With the invasion of candy floss entertainment, the hero and his heroic deeds had been relegated to the background. But Abhishek has brought it back with his performances in his last few films. I’ve cast Mr. Bachchan as Gabbar Singh in the present-day version of SHOLAY. It’s the most memorable character in Hindi cinema and I felt only the most memorable actor could do justice to it. Again, people asked me the same question: Will he [Bachchan] pull it off? I say, jo darr gaya, samjho mar gaya [Gabbar’s legendary dialogue from SHOLAY]. The Bachchans were, as always, modest about their achievements, but something that Bachchan Sr. spoke remain etched in our memory. I was recently shooting in Bangkok and there were a stream of visitors on the sets of the film. As a father, it was my proudest moment when a woman, who was watching me shoot, told her little kid, ‘Look, look, that’s Abhishek Bachchan‘s father.’ I couldn’t have asked for a bigger compliment. Amar Singh, who accompanied the father and son duo to the bash, spoke highly of RGV’s skills as a storyteller. Personally speaking, I felt he [Bachchan] had reached the zenith with his spellbinding performance in BLACK, but when I saw SARKAR, I couldn’t help but feel that he surprises me all the while. This was another towering performance, the political heavyweight spoke.
