Hema Malini – Diva Unveiled

It was a night to remember! The lavishly illustrated coffee table book on the eternal Dream Girl of Indian cinema, Hema Malini, was released at The Piano Bar, Mumbai. Titled ‘Hema Malini – Diva Unveiled’, the book is written by Ram Kamal Mukherjee. Not only is it the author’s first book, but also the first book written on Hema Malini ever. Tabu and veteran director Ramesh Sippy released the book. It’s a privilege to release the book on Hema-ji, who has always inspired me and many other actresses in Indian cinema, Tabu said on the occasion. Director Ramesh Sippy reminisced about his association with the actress: I thought of signing Nutan in ANDAZ, but after I saw Hema-ji’s photograph, I thought that she would be the widow in my film. He also spoke extensively about his interaction with the author and how the chapter ‘Hamara Naam Basanti Hai’ was penned. Also present on the occasion were Hema’s daughters Esha and Ahana Deol. She is a supermom. I think my mother deserves to be written about. I appreciate the endeavor of Ram Kamal for bringing out a book on her, said Esha. Hema’s cousin, actress Madhoo, revealed that she admired Hema as an actress and realized much later that Hema was a great person as well. We were never allowed to call her Didi, she would ask us to address her as ‘Hemu’ I felt she was arrogant at that point of time. But later, when I grew up, I realized that she is a far better human being. I look up to her as my role model. The diva of that evening, Hema Malini said, I thought Ram was just another fan. But, gradually, I realized that he had evolved into a fine journalist. He has this habit of surprising people. On my birthday last year, when he revealed that he had penned a book on me, I was shocked. But after going through the book and the efforts, I think he has done a fantastic job. ‘Diva Unveiled’ is a collector’s edition with more than 500 rare photographs, including unpublished photographs of Hema’s childhood, her first working still with Raj Kapoor in SAPNON KA SAUDAGAR, Esha’s naming ceremony, Hema and Dharmendra’s rare photographs, Sunny Deol‘s photographs with Hema’s daughters and an exclusive letter of Hema Malini written to her daughter in 1983. ‘Diva Unveiled’ also includes film posters of Hema’s films since 1970. Amitabh Bachchan has written the foreword. An audio-visual, made by Pankaj Dheer, was screened on the occasion.
