Domestic B.O.: Script is king!

By Bollywood Hungama

The curtains have fallen on 2007 and it’s that time of the year where just about everybody associated with the entertainment industry starts reflecting on the twelve months that passed by in a jiffy.

Every year brings with it its share of khushi and gham, smiles and tears, highs and lows and ups and downs. 2007 was no different. A number of people asked me if 2007, in retrospect, was a year best forgotten for the industry. Their argument was, the ratio of flops hit an all-time high this year.

I don’t subscribe to this statement. Sure, there were flops galore, but we managed several hits as well. Also, let’s not forget that the volume of business increased and how, courtesy films like OM SHANTI OM, WELCOME and PARTNER.

2008 brings in a lot of hope and promise. The ‘awakening’ [read, emphasis on scripts] has taken place already and 2008, as I see it, will be the year of fresh concepts, innovative ideas and novel stories. I am supremely confident of that!

The one thing I detest is, people trying to run down commercial/masala movies. It’s fashionable to criticize masala movies by select critics specifically, or else how would you claim to be intellectual? Theek hain, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but what’s wrong in pandering to the tastes of millions of moviegoers the world over?

Conversely, the same people love to eulogize and extol praises on anything and everything that the so-called ‘intellectual’ film-makers have to offer. Even if it’s trash [most of the times, it is!], they go ga-ga over it. Down with such morons and nincompoops!

The year 2007 ended on a sad note. SHOWBIZ had a rough ride from Day 1. The cancellation of shows due to lack of audience proved that the viewers weren’t interested in this media versus star war. On the other hand, RETURN OF HANUMAN suffered due to a wrong release period. With school exams round the corner, its target audience [kids] stayed away from this film, although, I must add, it’s a decent product.

RETURN OF HANUMAN is Anurag Kashyap’s third flop in a row, after BLACK FRIDAY and NO SMOKING. I believe, Kashyap has remarked that RETURN OF HANUMAN would break the record of OM SHANTI OM at the box-office. Quite a comment… I am sure, Kashyap would either deny it or apologize to the concerned parties pronto.

Kashyap loves to pass comments at others, but how about analysing his flop status for a change? After all, he’s had a hat-trick of flops in 2007.
