Biz Talk: Prabhas, Allu Arjun, Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Kamal Haasan and Suriya to rescue Bollywood from box office drought this year

By Taran Adarsh

PRABHAS - ALLU ARJUN - NTR JR - RAM CHARAN - KAMAL HAASAN - SURIYA TO BAIL OUT BOLLYWOOD… This is a bitter pill to swallow for those who constantly indulge in North vs South debate.

Biz Talk: Prabhas, Allu Arjun, Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Kamal Haasan and Suriya to rescue Bollywood from box office drought this year

While the Hindi film industry faces an acute shortage of event films this year, the South industry is expected to bail out the Hindi industry in the coming months. That’s a fact, like it or not.

Prabhas [Kalki 2898 AD], Allu Arjun [Pushpa 2], NTR Jr [Devara] and Ram Charan [Game Changer] - all arriving this year - are expected to storm the markets with their new films.

Additionally, Kamal Haasan and Shankar are bringing the second instalment of the super-successful Indian [Hindustani] in June. Besides, there’s Suriya arriving with the much-awaited Kanguva in the second half of 2024.

The films in question will have an extensive release in North markets, thus providing the much-needed relief to the exhibition sector.

BIZ TURNS ICE-COLD THIS SUMMER… Summer time [mid-April and May] - coinciding with the vacation period - was always considered lucrative for film biz since decades… This year, unfortunately, not one Hindi biggie is arriving in cinemas till May 2024.

The exhibition sector is in a tight spot since there’s not much stamina / fuel left in films that were released in the recent past. Hindi film biz has plummeted in this scorching summer period.

WAKE UP, SMELL THE COFFEE… The debacle of two prominent films this Eid - Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Maidaan - should serve as a wake up call for the industry. The star fees - including the exorbitant expenses of the paraphernalia associated with stars - need to be brought under control.

It’s time for correction. Will producers / Studios still remain in deep slumber? Let’s see who bells the cat first.

OVER-EXPOSURE: TIME TO ADAPT TO LESS-IS-MORE STRATEGY… In the 1970s as well as 1980s, the major stars of that era - Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Jeetendra, Rishi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor - had 6-7-8 films releasing year after year.

There’s a paradigm shift of late… Today, 3 - 4 - 5 film releases in a year - featuring an A-list actor - raises eyebrows. These days, the fatigue factor creeps in when there’s an overdose of anything, which wasn’t the case in the bygone era.

One needs to change with times. It’s time our actors adapt the less-is-more strategy. Doing less films + concentrating on qualitative scripts are of paramount importance.

Let’s not forget, teer nishaane pe baar-baar nahi lagta, what say?
