AJAY STUMBLES, MANISHA BACK ON TRACK

By Bollywood Hungama

'PARWANA'

The opening varied from good to ordinary, but the one factor that has been unanimous is the public verdict – the film has not found any appreciation. From the box-office point of view, there has been a sharp decline in collections as days progressed.

'MARKET'

The film has surprised many an industry watcher. Its opening was moderate at a few places, but dull at some centres, but there has been a marked increase in collections at some places. Mumbai, for instance, is holding on quite well. The one factor that goes in its favour is its reasonable pricing [35-40], which should prove advantageous for its investors.

IS AN OVERDOSE OF 'MULTIPLEX' FILMS 'KILLING' THEIR PROSPECTS?

Last week witnessed the release of two medium-budget films belonging to the lately-popular genre of 'multiplex' films. While JOGGERS' PARK has met with a decent response, the business of CHUPKE SE… is far from exciting.

The general opinion is that an overdose of such films, which are releasing in rapid succession, is 'killing' the prospects of these films at the ticket window. Two prominent exhibitors shed light on this issue.

VIMAL DOSHI

Central Plaza, Mumbai

"The response to CHUPKE SE… has been way below expectations, but it is difficult to figure out why the film hasn't clicked with the audiences considering that it is a well made, sensible film. In fact, it is qualitatively better than RULES, which has been drawing packed houses even in its second week.

"I don't think this has anything to do with the release of too many 'crossover/multiplex' films in the past few weeks. On the contrary, I feel the film sent out confusing signals. On one hand it gave the impression of being a low-budget urban film. On the other hand, the 2.40 hours' length of the film was a major deterrent.

"The poor response could also be attributed to the low-key pre-release publicity and the timing of the film's release. The producers should've released it in an open week, not with so many oppositions.

"At the end of the day, one has to assume that a film that draws a good response is a good film and vice versa."

NEERAJ GOSWAMI

Fame Adlabs, Mumbai

"I think the response to both JOGGERS' PARK and CHUPKE SE… is theatre specific. The two films have fared well at Fame Adlabs. The weekend [Friday to Sunday] collections have been good and the subsequent days' [Monday onwards] collections aren't bad either.

"I don't think the line-up of so many low-budget, experimental films is likely to affect the curiosity level of these films. On the contrary, the more the merrier. Even a two-week run for these films is enough to generate a certain margin of assured returns."
