The entire commercial was shot against a chroma background using a film camera, which would later augment the digital set extensions. Although the initial brief that was received from the agency was to create the city skyline, the scope of work increased to simulating the shattered glass as well. With a combination of CGI, matte paintings and compositing, the scope of work on the commercial increased as the production process progressed.
One of the most challenging aspects in executing such a commercial was, controlling the Dynamic simulations of the shattered glass. For the agency, this was the most important factor that would point out the 'bright coloured LED technology present in the product for which the broken glass pieces had to emulate the commercial's message. To achieve this, loads of research was conducted on acquiring the perfect dynamics and the right shaders for the glass. Viral says, "We looked at many glass references on how they behave and interact with light and also how glass shatters, especially stain glass. If you notice, in one of the shots the glass also casts caustic shadows on the man's face. Every detail was taken in account, in addition even the broken glass pieces had to have the right details to it."
As the real glass could not provide the desired shatter effect, Pixion went ahead and recreated the shattered glass using a combination of dynamic simulations with the Academy Award winning software Maya, even the building from which the man jumps was moulded digitally in 3D. As a VFX supervisor, it was extremely crucial for Viral to take note of the kind of lens that was used shooing the ad along with the lighting information. This information would then be used to digitally mimic the environment it was shot in order to make the commercial flawless.
Pixion Studios one of India's most prominent post-production houses has delivered its visual effects prowess for Samsung's latest LED TV commercial. Under the supervision of VFX extraordinaire, Viral Thakkar, the entire commercial was augmented through VFX with only the model shot on a chroma set. Talking about the initiation and the pre-production stage, Viral says, "Right from the planning stage, we broke down the script from a VFX point of view and we understood the requirement of the advertisement and planned the entire commercial." The shooting process was accomplished in one and a half days and Pixion delivered the first draft of the ad in two days to the agency, Bang Bang films. "With a team of 12 compositors and 8 CGI artists, we achieved this massive task in two days and nights. Thereafter we were bestowed with delivering the project in two weeks," adds Viral.
