Box Office: Rustom has a good weekend, Akshay Kumar sets the record for maximum 100 crore films in a year

Rustom scored a good second weekend at the Box Office by bringing in Rs. 17 crore* more. With this, the film now stands at Rs. 108 crore*. While for the makers it is now time to celebrate hard, it is also remarkable for the fact that it is the first time ever that a superstar has scored as many as three centuries in a single calendar year.

Starting with Ailift and continuing with Housefull 3, Akshay Kumar is now signing off 2016 with his third century in Rustom. In fact all of this has happened within 7 months flat. Considering the fact that the actor is capable of releasing four films in a calendar year (he has already done that last year), one wonders if he could well have brought one more movie in the remaining 4 months of the year and set an unassailable record.

Of course there is Salman Khan who has scored more in a calendar year. Last year he crossed the Rs. 500 crore mark with the combined collections of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo hitting the roof. However, this is where the buck stops as he was followed by Akshay Kumar himself who brought in Rs. 350 crore between his four releases - Baby, Gabbar Is Back, Brothers and Singh Is Bliing.

In 2016, he has already brought in close to Rs. 350 crore between Airlift, Housefull 3 and Rustom, and is still counting. This is set to be the best year for the actor and one now waits to see the kind of milestones that he crosses once Robot 2.0, Crack and Jolly LLB 2 hit the screens in 2017.

As for an actor hitting three or more centuries in a single year, it doesn't seem like a possibility since neither of the three Khans works in more than one or two movies a year. The only other prolific actor (apart from Akshay Kumar) is Ajay Devgn and he too has only two confirmed releases in 2017 [Baadshaho, Golmaal 4]. However, if not for the calendar year, Ajay could well be matching the record of three centuries in 12 months since Shivaay [October 2016], Baadshaho [May 2017] and Golmaal 4 [October 2017] would be releasing in this time duration.

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited
