Kabir Singh has managed to find an entry into the record books when it comes to the BIGGEST OPENING for the first half of 2019. It has collected the fourth highest numbers and is just marginally below Kalank and Kesari which were far bigger films.
In fact the biggest of the lot is Bharat, an event Eid offering, which starred Salman Khan & Katrina Kaif, and was released at over 4000 screens. On the other hand Kabir Singh had Shahid Kapoor in the lead whose last solo release Batti Gul Meter Chalu opened at Rs. 6.76 crores. Moreover, the film wasn't event an event or a holiday arrival, though had a good release at over 3100 screens. However, Kabir Singh has almost tripled the numbers of Batti Gul Meter Chalu when it comes to the opening day.
Bharat – Rs. 42.30 crores
Kalank – Rs. 21.60 crores
Kesari – Rs. 21.06 crores
Kabir Singh – Rs. 20.21 crores
Gully Boy – Rs. 19.40 crores
What also has to be noted is that even Kalank had an advantage of the partial holiday of Mahaveer Jayanti, while Kesari too arrived on Holi, another partial holiday.
In that aspect, the success of Kabir Singh is even sweeter since it had a conventional Friday release and had it been supported by a holiday, at least Rs. 25 crores would have come in which would have made it an even bigger opener.
That said, the film is now set to have a bigger opening weekend when compared to all these films (barring Bharat), hence establishing it well for a healthy week ahead. The word of mouth for the film is good which means Kabir Singh is set for a good long run.
