The New Year 2018 has started off on a good note with films doing well at the box office. In fact, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat that fond itself surrounded by controversies has done roaring business at the box office, while the Akshay Kumar starrer Pad Man that made way for the beleaguered Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor starrer has too enjoyed a similar fate. But before we go ahead with the releases this year, we take a retrospective look at some records that were established in 2017, which are more than likely to be broken by releases this year.
Given the fact that 2017 saw a rather low box office turn out for most releases, it comes as no surprise that the biggest hit of the year is the Salman Khan – Katrina Kaif starrer Tiger Zinda Hai. Released in December the film has managed to claim a staggering number of records from becoming the highest domestic, the Highest Profit Generating movie of the Year and even the Highest, First, Second, Third, and Fourth weekend grosser of the year.
However, an interesting point that comes to notice here is that while Tiger Zinda Hai leads the charge, releases like Secret Superstar, the Irrfan Khan starrer Hindi Medium and the Vidya Balan starrer Begum Jaan too find a mention on the list. In fact, while Hindi Medium holds the records for the Highest Grossing ‘U' certificate film as well as the Highest Opening Day, Opening Weekend, and Opening Week to Lifetime Multiple, Begum Jaan has managed to become the Highest Grossing ‘A’ rated film of the year. On the other hand, Secret Superstar holds the record for the highest grosser (overseas) as well as the highest grosser (worldwide).
