Pink has taken a better than expected start at the box office. A film belonging to the same genre, Talvar(an investigative thriller), had opened with Rs. 2.5 crore coming in on the day of release. Amitabh Bachchan‘s TE3N, again a dramatic thriller, had started at Rs. 2.61 crore. Pink too was expected to open on the same lines, especially since it has a grim subject at the center of affairs and isn’t quite a quintessential mainstream entertainer. Still, it has fetched a start of Rs. 4.32 crore, which is a positive enough start for the film.
The film has seen a good number of shows, which means from the occupancy standpoint it would come across as a 30%-40% start at an average. However, from the bottom-line perspective, a film like Pinkbringing in such numbers is positive indeed since the word of mouth has just started spreading. It is one of the best received films at the box office in 2016, both from critical acclaim and audience word of mouth perspective, which means further good jumps are definitely on the cards today and tomorrow.
For the three young women, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Tariang, this is heartening news indeed as it is their talent, and not the glamour quotient, which has resulted in Pink being one of the most talked about films of the year. The film deserves to go higher up, both from acclaim and commercial outcome standpoint, and it has to be seen how much faster does the word of mouth spread from this point on.
