With highly-priced projects not even managing a decent opening at the box-office, most producers are thinking twice before announcing a big-budget film these days. Last week, there was speculation that the Jain brothers of Venus had decided to abandon the idea of going ahead with the Dharmesh Darshan-directed film, for which they had finalized Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Rahul Khanna.
But Venus’ Ratan Jain says that the economics of the project was not the sole reason that prompted them to shelve the film. “There were other limitations that prevented us from going ahead with it. Even otherwise, we were only considering the project. There are so many projects that we plan, but they don’t necessarily materialise,” Jain discloses.
‘SHAKTI – THE POWER’ CONFIRMED FOR SEPT. 20
Until a week ago, speculation was rife that SHAKTI – THE POWER would not be released on September 20 since its music had not been released. “But that’s hardly a limitation considering that the film has generated tremendous curiosity thanks to its promising promos,” says Mumbai distributor Rakesh Sippy, “In any case, the speculation has now been put to rest with producer Boney Kapoor giving us the go-ahead to book the chain of theatres. Moreover, he even sent a written letter confirming the release date of the film.”
The countdown has begun!
IT’S ‘SHAKTI’ VERSUS ‘GUNAAH’ FOR SURE
September 20 is a crucial week for Tips! On one hand they have the music rights of SHAKTI – THE POWER and on the other, they have the Mumbai rights of GUNAAH, which is also scheduled for release on the same day. Meanwhile, Mumbai distributor Rajesh Thadani (who is releasing the film jointly with Tips in Mumbai) has confirmed that there will be no change in the release date of GUNAAH. “We are in the process of finalising the chain of theatres. Even otherwise, the simultaneous release of the two films is unlikely to make a difference because they have a different feel,” Rajesh says.
A TRICKY SITUATION, SAYS VIVECK VASWANI
The producers and distributors of other films, who had earlier scheduled their releases on September 20, are already re-considering their decision. Producer Viveck Vaswani has decided to re-schedule his film DIL VIL PYAR VYAR either on September 27 or October 4. “The music promos of my film have received a tremendous response. But it doesn’t make sense trying to release the film on September 20. The film can withstand the competition of one film, but not two big films. I am planning to leave the decision entirely up to my film’s distributors now,” Viveck states.
