The moment someone says 'cheese', the very first thing which pops up in mind is 'camera'. But, when it comes to 'photography with a class', the very first name which pops up in mind is 'Avinash Gowariker'. That is the kind of association which the renowned photographer Avinash Gowariker has with his camera lens. Be it shooting with celebrities, film publicity, editorial, advertising campaigns, fashion photography, model portfolios, portraiture, working stills..., this man has 'seen it,clicked that'!
Satish Sundaresan of Bollywood Hungama caught up with the man of every season and every reason, who took time out of his super busy schedule in a freewheeling interview. In this first part of this conversation, Avinash talks about some of his favourite pictures that he has shot. Over to Avinash...
This picture of Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao was shot during the promotions of Dhobi Ghat. We did a spate of many covers. This particular image we shot was for Cine Blitz at 'Pali Village Cafe'. The dynamics of this snap are really good. We all know that Aamir Khan is a superstar in his own right. However here, it is not Aamir who is in focus, but Kiran is… which, I think is quite interesting.Needless to say that, we really had a gala of a time shooting this.
This photograph was taken during Aamir Khan and Imran Khan's promotions of the latter's debut film Jaane Tu... Yaa..Jaane Naa. This photograph was for the cover of 'Cine Blitz' magazine. The shoot was done at Mehboob Recording Studios' first floor. Aamir and Imran don't look 'mama-bhatija', butthey look like brothers, which is really very cool. During the shoot, Aamir became emotional as he remembered the late Nasir Hussain recording songs there.
This is one of the shoots which I personally love. Priyanka Chopra, as you all know, is not just a supermodel, but a super, supermodel! This photograph was for the 'Hi Blitz' cover. Priyanka is one of the girls who likes and loves to experiment. During this shoot, I had used a simple beauty light, but she insisted that I make it little edgy and hard. That's why I used a hard spotlight here. Generally, I do not use any hard lights to light up the face. But, Priyanka carried the same really very well!
Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri are both always a delight to shoot with. This photograph was particularly shot for 'D' Decor' campaign. Generally, whenever I shoot a film star, it is always with a heroine. But, here, the 'heroine' was none other than his wife Gauri Khan! The chemistry between Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri was really something to be seen to be believed.
Deepika Padukone is always a super pleasure to shoot with. This photograph was taken during a shoot for FHM magazine, whichactually was an impromptu last minute shoot. Deepika is someone who looks good in any light. Here, I shot her with a theatre light. The shadow of the fan which is falling on Deepika's legs simply elevated the image by notches.
