The Yash Raj Films venture Shamshera directed by Karan Malhotra hit screens on Friday last week. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, and Vaani Kapoor the film has been heavily promoted in the run-up to its release. If that was not enough, Shamshera has also been one of the most keenly anticipated releases of recent times. Given these facts along with the wide screen count of 1200 screens in the international markets, Shamshera was expected to open on a high note. However, with lackluster reviews and audience reticence to venture into theatres for the film, the business of Shamshera has been disastrous.
In this box office report, we look at the opening weekend collections of Shamshera in the international markets while comparing the same to previous releases of 2022. Collecting USD 1.25 million Shamshera has emerged as the fourth highest opening weekend grosser of 2022 in the international markets. While the business of the film does surpass the collections of the Akshay Kumar starrer Bachchhan Paandey which collected USD 1.04 million, it fails to hold a candle to the business of other releases. In fact, leading the list of highest grossers of 2022 in the international markets are previous releases like Gangubai Kathiawadi which collected USD 2.75 million, Jugjugg Jeeyo which collected USD 2.2 million, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 which collected USD 2 million.
As of now, Shamshera, which faces little to no competition, continues to run in theatres. However, given the current trend and the response, the film has received trade predictions that paint a bleak image of the film’s collections. As per estimates the business of Shamshera will continue to see an increase but at a marginal rate.
