The much talked about and heavily promoted Karan Malhotra directorial Shamshera was released last week on Friday. Starring Ranbir Kapoor in a double role alongside Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor the film was expected to open to a thunderous start. Given the massive scale Shamshera was mounted on, and the wide release across 4,350 screens, the film was touted to be the next big release. However contrary to expectations, Shamshera opened on a disastrous note and continued to remain low over its opening weekend.
In this box office report, we look at the box office collections of Shamshera while comparing the same to Ranbir Kapoor’s previous releases. Collecting 31.75 cr. Shamshera has now become Ranbir’s sixth flop among the actor’s last eight releases. As it stands, Sanju, which collected Rs. 342.53 cr, and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which collected Rs. 112.48 cr, are the actors’ only two releases to work at the box office. In fact, Shamshera now joins Ranbir Kapoor’s other releases like Jagga Jasoos which collected Rs. 54.16 cr, Tamasha which collected Rs. 67.26 cr, Bombay Velvet which collected Rs. 23.67 cr, Roy which collected Rs. 44.52 cr and Besharam which had collected Rs. 59.79 cr.
Given the current trend, Shamshera, which was expected to see around Rs. 50 cr. coming in over its opening weekend has severely underperformed. Going further, with the audience opting to stay away from theatres, the business of the film is unlikely to see much of an increase.
