Drishyam 2 has emerged as a bonafide super hit at the box office by scoring a century in one week straight. In the times when entering into the Rs. 100 Crore Club itself is coming at a premium, for a film to do that in a matter of just 7 days is truly stupendous. This happened due to very good opening numbers followed by excellent growth over the weekend and then staying very stable during the weekdays. Now that’s putting all the right ticks against all the boxes because that’s the recipe for a film to see a long run coming, something that the Ajay Devgn starrer is all set for.
Currently, the film stands at Rs. 104.66 crores and in the process it has gone past the lifetime numbers of biggies like JugJugg Jeeyo (Rs. 85.25 crores), Vikram Vedha (Rs. 77.51 crores), Ram Setu (Rs. 71.62 crores), Samrat Prithviraj (rs. 68.05 crores) and Laal Singh Chaddha (Rs. 58.68 crores). Of course, at least a few of these movies deserved to have a longer run but then 2022 has been very unpredictable for movie business. It’s a matter of one movie rejuvenating the industry and hopefully that has happened now with the Abhishek Pathak directed film and now audiences will start returning to theatres.
In its own small way, Uunchai has also made a contribution in this direction. The film did have a reasonable first week of Rs. 17.02 crores on limited release. However just when word of mouth for the film had started picking, there came Drishyam 2 and the momentum shifted towards that movie in a big way. As it is, the Sooraj Barjatya film was appealing to limited audience base and hence the impact was felt all the more. As a result, the second week saw a drop in numbers with just around Rs. 9 crores coming in. The film’s total currently stands at Rs. 26.42 crores and eventually will go past the Rs. 30 crores mark. It did have potential to get into Rs. 35-40 crores range but would now be watched more on the OTT and satellite circuits.
