Arjun Rampal's Daddy is all set to release after being in news for around a year. The film saw good promotional kick-start for itself when it was announced that it was based on the life of gangster turned politician Arun Gawli. This by itself led to good curiosity. Moreover, the film is being directed by Ashim Ahluwalia who has critically acclaimed Miss Lovely to his credit. Though he is known primarily in the industry circles, it would be interesting to see how transitions into the 'aam junta' with this film.
Teaser of the film came around six months back and then there was silence. Even recently the film's release date was changed and now that it is arriving, the timing is right since there is not much of a competition. However, the genre that it belongs to (underworld crime drama) and the treatment that it has (primarily catering to that segment of masses which has been fond of such stories being narrated on screen) means the audience would be restricted at least to begin with.
As a result, from the opening perspective, it could well be looking at an opening around the Rs. 2 crore mark. Of course the film has been mounted on a reasonable scale which means it needs to jump well over the weekend to earn big moolah. However, what would eventually help it is the word of mouth and if the early reports are anything to go by, from the content and storytelling perspective Ashim and Arjun have got it right.
In the times when offbeat films are doing well for themselves, one waits to see how Daddy revives the gangster genre that was once made popular by Ram Gopal Varma.
