Hollywood continues to make inroads in the Indian market. In fact, it has become a tradition to stay away from big ticket Hollywood releases that enjoy tremendous popularity amongst Indian moviegoers and are released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages, besides English of course. The week gone by was no different! At a time when the release schedule [Hindi films] is packed with films and more films, there was no significant Hindi release last week, thus clearing the path for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 to dominate the domestic BO. The Hindi films that decided to brave the storm -- PURANI JEANS and KYA DILLI KYA LAHORE -- got the royal snub from the audiences.
With Hollywood biggies going from strength to strength in the Indian market, it is foolhardy to think that the audience is gonna look elsewhere. No wonder, PURANI JEANS and KYA DILLI KYA LAHORE opened to poor houses and failed to grow over the weekend. The question that crosses your mind is, why would anyone risk releasing his film with an opponent as big and mighty as THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2?
Agree, the Hollywood biggie is not faring as well in its dubbed version. The word of mouth is pretty mixed too. Yet, the weekend business of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is simply super... in fact, it's better than several Hindi films that opened this year.
Conversely, both PURANI JEANS and KYA DILLI KYA LAHORE lacked star presence and the nonexistent pre-release buzz only made matters worse. In the meanwhile, 2 STATES is galloping gloriously towards the 100 cr mark [nett biz] in the domestic market. Will it hit the ton? Let's wait and watch!
