NOT MUCH EXCITEMENT

By Bollywood Hungama

The week gone by was hardly exciting for the film industry, going by the response to the two releases, KARZ-THE BURDEN OF TRUTH and RISHTEY. But the distributors of the two films aren't complaining. Says Vinay Choksey, the Mumbai distributor of RISHTEY, “If the collections haven't been too good, they haven't been bad either.” Vinay adds that the film is unlikely to be a losing proposition in Mumbai territory.

The Mumbai distributor of KARZ, Pinky Badlani, is honest about the fact that the film hasn't fared as expected. “The Idd period worked for the film's opening but after the first three days, the collections started dropping sharply,” he says. Badlani blames the content of the film for its lacklustre response. “The story had nothing new to offer. Even the action-based second half was far from convincing,” he adds.

Badlani admits that with KAANTE getting postponed to next week, KARZ would get a breather for one more week. “To be honest, had KAANTE released in the Idd week, both RISHTEY and KARZ would have got wiped off. The postponement of the film has proved to be a blessing in disguise for us,” he says.

Let's have a look at the midweek response to KARZ and RISHTEY. An IndiaFM exclusive.

'KARZ'

The weekend (Friday to Sunday) collections in Mumbai city-suburbs were excellent, but the collections started dropping from Monday/Tuesday… Gujarat also witnessed a similar trend… Pune collections are strong, but the reports are not… Uttar Pradesh is excellent, although a slight drop has been witnessed from Monday. Has registered a sharp drop at a few cinema halls in Delhi city-suburbs… Started well in Kolkata city-suburbs, but reports are mixed… The start in Nagpur was quite impressive at a few cinema halls and the collections were steady till Sunday, but collections have started sliding from Monday onwards… Jaipur opening was impressive, but a drop was noticed on Monday… Hyderabad is excellent.

'RISHTEY'

The film started pretty well and the first 3 days' collections are good, but Monday onwards a few cinema halls registered a drop… Business in Gujarat is fair… Pune was strong in the opening weekend, but a drop was noticed from Monday… Collections in Uttar Pradesh are better than Delhi city-suburbs… Kolkata city-suburbs is just about okay… Opening in Nagpur was poor and a drop was noticed subsequently… Jaipur is also not strong… Hyderabad is steady.
