No genre is foolproof!

Years ago, post QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK and MAINE PYAAR KIYA, a number of film-makers rushed to announce love stories. The mega-bucks that these two films raked in prompted producers to believe that the paying public was inclined towards romances.

I distinctly remember, the 'Launchings' section of 'Trade Guide' was full of fresh announcements and almost all projects were romantic fares. But the boom was short-lived. A couple of keenly-anticipated love stories tanked at the box-office and the producers started looking for a new formula of success.

In the recent past, the success of comedies/entertainers made people believe that the only way to lure people in hordes is by making them laugh. But is this genre foolproof? Last Friday witnessed the release of two comedies - DHOOM DADAKKA and DON MUTHUSWAMI - but both turned tragedies at the box-office.

DHOOM DADAKKA was extensively and aggressively promoted prior to its release. Shashi Ranjan went all out this time, after burning his fingers in DOBARA. Non-stop promotion on TV, hoardings at all strategic points, lining up interviews for important shows… Shashi and Anu Ranjan's movie stood out in the plethora of new releases.

But producer proposes, audience disposes. The movie opened to empty halls and those who did watch it didn't have positive things to say either. The business was so sad that some exhibitors weren't sure if the film would manage to complete even a one-week run.

The fate of DON MUTHUSWAMI was equally sad. Its promotion started 3 weeks prior to its release, but the promos were so tacky and the visuals that one got to watch were so outdated and unenergetic that the verdict was out even before it had released. One needs to change with times, adapt to the changes that one watches around us. But DON MUTHUSWANI looked like a product of the bygone era. Old wine in an old bottle!

GHATOTHKACH too couldn't lure the kids, its target audience. The occupancy was low everywhere. All in all, nothing to cheer, except JANNAT, which is making everyone associated with it grin from ear to ear.
