The Idd week witnessed the 'clash' of two biggies, Yash & Karan Johar's much-anticipated KAL HO NAA HO and Feroz Khan's JANASHEEN. While both opened to a thumping response, the collections of the latter dropped sharply at several places after the first three days.
Two prominent exhibitors of Mumbai and the C.I. distributor of KAL HO NAA HO analyse the response to the films.
Fame Adlabs [multiplex], Mumbai
"Looking at the way it has been received at the box-office, I am certain that KAL HO NAA HO is a super-duper hit and falls in the big league in terms of the business it is likely to generate. The hype, the packaging, the narrative style and the performances of the principal cast have resulted in the terrific initial.
"The Punjabi-Gujarati element that has been injected in the screenplay has also clicked in a big way. I am expecting the film to have a long run at the box-office, at par with the previous Shah Rukh starrer CHALTE CHALTE.
"As for JANASHEEN, the film did open to a fantastic response because of the Idd holidays, but the collections have dropped subsequently. I guess, the film got affected because of the KAL HO NAA HO wave, which had been dominating right from Day 1. In fact, the business of all films plummeted after KAL HO NAA HO released."
Exhibitor – released KAL HO NAA HO in Saurashtra and JANASHEEN at New Era, Mumbai
"JANASHEEN did get the benefit of the Idd week, but the collections of the film have been average after the first three days. The reason for the drop in its collections is its clash with KAL HO NAA HO. The film would've fared much better had it released without any opposition. The predictable storyline also went against the film.
"As for the response to KAL HO NAA HO in Jamnagar, the film has received a humungous response so far and going by the reports, it is likely to hold for a long time at the box-office."
Morya Arts P. Ltd., C.I. distributors of KAL HO NAA HO
"KAL HO NAA HO has no doubt opened to an exceptional response all over C.I., but it is the 'A' class centres where the film has managed to retain its hold thereafter. The film hasn't lived up to the expectations at small centres, but that's because of the elections in Madhya Pradesh, which coincided with the film's release. Moreover, the elections were keenly contested this time, making the elections the focus of all attention. However, we are expecting the film to pick up in the coming days at these centres.
"The content of the film has been widely appreciated, so has the manner in which Dharma Productions have packaged the film. Director Nikhil Advani is certainly a welcome addition to the list of talented directors like Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra. I am expecting the film to touch the 'Overflow' mark, despite the fact that the elections have affected its business."
