Karan Johar shares cryptic post week after Dharma-Adar Poonawalla deal: “People at the top are collaborating”
Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar recently sparked curiosity among fans with a cryptic social media post following his deal with businessman Adar Poonawalla. On Sunday, Karan Johar shared an Instagram story reading, “Competition happens at the bottom. The people at the top are collaborating,” hinting at the recent strategic partnership he struck with Poonawalla’s Serene Productions.

The deal, which saw Serene Productions acquire a 50% stake in Johar's Dharma Productions and Dharmatic Entertainment, has set the industry abuzz. The collaboration aims to craft high-quality, globally resonant content, with Johar retaining his role as Executive Chairman to guide Dharma’s creative direction.
However, the move has also stirred mixed reactions online, with many sharing memes and humorous quips. Actor Jaaved Jaaferi joined in, suggesting Dharma’s next film title: Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Serum, while other fans humorously pitched titles like Covi Khushi Covi Gham and Vaccine Ke Baad Se Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
The Rationale Behind the Partnership
Dharma Productions has seen several of its recent projects struggle at the box office, and with rising production costs, this strategic partnership offers renewed financial backing. Serene Productions plans to invest over Rs 1,000 crore, combining Dharma’s storytelling legacy with Poonawalla’s financial expertise.
The official statement from Serene Productions outlined, “India’s entertainment industry has experienced remarkable growth, driven by increasing digital penetration and a diverse audience seeking high-quality content across multiple platforms with growing global relevance.” The deal, therefore, aligns both companies’ goals of reaching a wider, international audience.
