Bollywood lesbians enrage Shiv Sena

By Bollywood Hungama -

It happens again! A slightly offbeat cinema with some explicit scenes hits the theatres and some rightwing social activists go berserk on moral grounds. In a similar case, a cinema hall in Varanasi was set ablaze when it screened this week's release Girlfriend based on the theme of lesbianism. The Kranti Shiv Sena group set the Sajjan movie hall in Sigra locality of Varanasi on fire and even claimed responsibility for the act without regrets. The Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena wing of Shiv Sena created similar chaos outside Premiere theatre in Dadar, Mumbai where the film was screened as a matinee show. The police however stepped in and brought the issue under control. Prior to this, similar chaotic incidents erupted when Deepa Mehta's Fire was released in 1998, which too was based on the theme of lesbianism. Moreover, the shooting for Mehta's other film Water had to be stopped abruptly when some activists in Varanasi objected to its content, which according to them was against the Indian culture. The film was subsequently shelved indefinitely.
