Rawail, Frank Oz release similar themed films on same day Click here to add this article to My Clips

By Subhash K. Jha, August 20, 2007 - 14:08 IST

This sounds like a worthy candidate for the believe-it-or-nuts columns. Rahul Rawail's raunchy comedy about death in an affluent dysfunctional family in Mumbai Buddha Mar Gaya and Frank Oz's comedy Death At A Funeral about the black humour that ensues on the death of an aristocract in London were released on the same Friday (August 17)

"I know," laughs Rahul Rawail. "How do we explain the uncanny resemblances between our film and Death At A Funeral, and that too when both are released on the same day? I wasn't even aware of Frank Oz's film or its content until a friend pointed them out to me. And the fact that it's released on the same day as our film only accentuates the irony. Our film has been savaged by the critics while Death At a Funeral with similar off-colour jokes about corpses and gay relationships has been appreciated."

Anupam Kher who's in Bangkok shooting for Shashi Ranjan’s comedy Dhoom Dhadaka feels comedies are here to stay. Says Anupam, "When I heard about Death At A Funeral I fell out of my seat. It was too coincidental to be real, like those long-lost twins who suddenly came face to face. Comedies are the flavour everywhere. People want to go to the cinema to laugh."
