It’s a normal practice for producers to visit movieplexes to gauge audience feedback once their film releases. But Vidhu Vinod Chopra cuts himself off from outside world the moment his film hits the marquee. The producer of MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S., PARINEETA, LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI and now EKLAVYA – THE ROYAL GUARD hasn’t visited a theatre since PARINDA. And there’s a story behind it!
Soon after the release of PARINDA, Vidhu made a trip to Alankar cinema in Mumbai, where the film was being screened. He met a young boy outside the theatre and casually asked him how he liked the film. To his utter shock, the youngster, who was unaware that the person he was talking to was the maker of PARINDA himself, started abusing Chopra, going to the extent of telling him “picture bakwas hain, galti se bhi theatre mein mat jaana.”
“I was so heartbroken that day,” Vidhu recalls the incident, “I decided against visiting a theatre to gauge audience feedback from that Friday onwards. See, my job ends when I make a film. If the verdict is positive, it’s fine. If not, even that’s fine.” Vidhu hasn’t visited a single theatre/multiplex yet for EKLAVYA – THE ROYAL GUARD as well. “I have been relaxing, visiting the spa, taking my family out… I don’t read newspapers, don’t carry a cellphone, my office is soundproof, I live in my ivory tower,” he divulges.
