The Jungfrau Encounter is a meaty 90 page book published by Westland Ltd. with story and the script by comic-book writer Yogesh Chandekar and gorgeous art by artist Saumin Patel. Patel's art has been brought to life in full-colour by a team of talented colourists and the book design and lettering has been done by London-based designer, Viraj Deo. Also, the book's page size is much larger than typical American comics and is more in tune with European/Franco-Belgian comics which offer a bigger and better canvas for graphic storytelling and art.
Saif Ali Khan's upcoming film Agent Vinod has been creating news and how. In fact the actor has decided to take it one step ahead in terms of the film's promotions and will soon release a graphic comic titled, 'The Jungfrau Encounter'. However, the novel is not an adaptation of the upcoming film but an original which introduces Agent Vinod and is set in the same fictional universe. While the story takes place before the events of the film but it is not exactly a prequel (though the ending does lead up to the beginning of the film). Bollywood Hungama gives its surfers a sneak peek into what to expect from the novel read on to find out more...
The book revolves around four mysterious strangers meeting at a restaurant high up in the Bernese Alps of Jungfrau, to settle a score with Agent Vinod, who is responsible for the predicament each of them are in. But when it's about Vinod, nothing is as it seems and the quiet afternoon gradually twists and turns towards an explosive conclusion. The book has enough action and intrigue to satisfy both die-hard action fans and lovers of suspense.
For the first time in the history of Indian cinema, a full-fledged graphic novel has been commissioned to compliment a film. There have been one-off promotional comics in the past serving as short prequels and adaptations to movies. But backed by a major publisher, the Jungfrau Encounter is a serious attempt to kick-start a graphic novel series that will run parallel with a movie franchise. It is also one of the first Indian graphic novels in the popular fiction category and caters to a much wider audience than traditional art-house graphic novels or serial superhero comics. Owing to its universal genre and affiliation to a mainstream Bollywood film, the book also stands a high chance of garnering mass appeal and even attracting non-comic book readers.
Saif Ali Khan himself has written a foreword for the book and it also features an afterword by director Sriram Ragahvan with an introduction to the characters from the film in his own words. Also included, is an elaborate bonus material section with a dossier featuring developmental art by Saumin Patel, a mock-RAW assessment report of Agent Vinod and a peek into the process of creating the graphic novel.
