The much talked about and immensely promoted Yash Raj Films venture Shamshera hit screens last week on Friday. Starring Ranbir Kapoor in a double role alongside Sanjay Dutt, and Vaani Kapoor the film was expected to take off on a flying note. However, contrary to expectations the Karan Malhotra directorial started on a tepid note with just Rs. 10.25 cr coming in on Day 1. Following this, the business of the film did not really see much of an increase over its first Saturday and Sunday in theatres.
In this box office report, we look at the opening weekend collections of Shamshera while comparing the same to Ranbir Kapoor’s previous releases. Collecting Rs. 31.75 cr Shamshera has emerged as Ranbir Kapoor’s ninth highest opening weekend grosser. Unfortunately, Shamshera despite featuring a wide screen count, and immense promotions failed to surpass Ranbir’s previous releases. In fact, preceding the film are the actor’s other releases like Sanju which collected Rs. 120.66 cr, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani which collected Rs. 62.11 cr, Besharam which collected Rs. 47.69 cr, Tamasha which collected Rs. 38.23 cr, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil which collected Rs. 35.60 cr, Jagga Jasoos which collected Rs. 34.6 cr, Rajneeti which collected Rs. 33.63 cr, and Rockstart which had collected Rs. 33.60 cr. On the other hand, though, the business of Shamshera does manage to surpass the collections of Ranbir’s other release Roy which had collected Rs. 10.10 cr.
Going forward, Shamshera is not expected to see much growth in its collections. As per trade estimates, the business of the film which has been floundering at the box office will continue its downward spiral over the coming weekdays.
