Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan’s aviation thriller, Runway 34 has taken a poor start at the box office. According to early estimates the action thriller has collected in the range of Rs. 3.00 to 3.50 crore on its opening day, with a major chunk of the business coming in from the multiplexes.
The Ajay Devgn-Rakul Preet starrer posted an occupancy of around 15% on the opening day, which is disappointing. The day one biz of Runway 34 is in the same range as films like Satyameva Jayate 2, Chandigarh Kare Aashqiui and slightly lower than last week’s release, Jersey. The performance of the film has shocked the industry, which was expecting the film to open around Rs. 5 crores.
It's back-to-back disappointment as far as the opening day business is concerned – be it Jersey or now Runway 34. All eyes are now on how Runway 34 fares through its weekend. Big jumps of 100% each need to come on Saturday and Sunday for the film to have some sort of chance of reaching a respectable total. If the jumps don’t come on the weekend, even the Eid holiday on weekdays won’t help the movie.
Basically, the film needs to clock an opening weekend of at-least Rs. 18 crore to have a shot of touching the half century number by the end of its run.
