Well begun is half done - This could well be true for Gangubai Kathiawadi which has netted Rs. 39.12 crores in its opening weekend, hence setting the stage from where consistent collections will take it through. Considering the fact that this one is an expensive film and has arrived at a time when there is so much uncertainty around how audiences step into theatres, the need of the hour was for the start to be good enough. Well, the film has done better than expected because Rs. 30 crores is what many expected it to collect in the opening weekend.
However, with the film taking a good lead already and going much ahead of that milestone in the first three days itself, it's now about how is the momentum sustained. The film cannot afford to lose steam since there is a lot of distance that needs to be covered so that the Rs. 100 Crore Club milestone is eventually achieved. This means that the film can't be looking at a 50% regular drop from Friday to Monday. As such this shouldn't happen since appreciation is there which has seen good growth on Saturday and Sunday. Still, let this be observed carefully.
At their end, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia Bhatt have done the job of bringing audiences into theatres. With a subject like prostitution, the audiences were as it is restricted. Moreover, it's the first big film to release after 83. While the pandemic situation has thankfully eased out, theatre business is yet to go back to pre-COVID levels. A lot of onus was on Gangubai Kathiawadi to get it right and while it has managed to do that, one needs to see how films to follow keep bringing audiences back on a regular basis.
