Finally, it is time for a film to arrive that would take the best start for a Bollywood film in 2022. So far, the record has been held by Kartik Aaryan's Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, which took a start of Rs. 14.11 crores. Otherwise such disheartening has been a situation when it comes to Bollywood movies that after Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, the next best has been only Bachchan Pandey [Rs. 13.25 crores] with no film even coming close to the Rs. 15 crores mark, leave aside the Rs. 20 crores mark.
The one that did manage that was RRR [Rs. 20.07 crores] but it was a dubbed affair. The other was Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness [Rs. 28.35 crores] and that was a Hollywood affair. As for KGF - Chapter 2 [Hindi], it came from a different planet altogether as it collected Rs. 53.95 crores on its opening day despite being dubbed.
This is what makes Ayan Mukherji's Brahmastra important as even though it won't be competing with the likes of KGF 2, at the least it would surpass Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and RRR [Hindi] quite comfortably and could well be challenging Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as well. If the advance booking so far is any indication, an opening day number of Rs. 25 crores is a given for the Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer and the only way further that it would go from that point is upwards.
This is the reason why it would be closely observed whether the Karan Johar production has in it to challenge some of the biggest openings that films have seen post pandemic. Last year, Sooryavanshi had taken a start of Rs. 26.29 crores and that number is very much in reach. On the other, hand Spider-Man: No Way Home had started at Rs. 32.67 crores and that seems far away. However, as long as at least the Rs. 25 crores milestone is hit by the biggie with Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy in key roles, it is going to be a game on for Brahmastra.
