It has been a while now since the Kangana Ranaut starrer Dhaakad hit screens. Unfortunately, the film too failed to impress the audiences. In fact, Dhaakad, which released across 2500+ screens worldwide, hit around 2200 screens in India. Despite this wide release pattern and of course the tag of being a female oriented action entertainer, Dhaakad sunk without a trace. Bollywood Hungama compares Dhaakad with a recently released venture that faced a similar fate at the box office.
For this purpose, we look at the business of the Nushrratt Bharuccha starrer Janhit Mein Jaari that hit a measly 542 screens across the country. Surprisingly, Dhaakad collected Rs. 1.96 cr. over its opening weekend as compared to Janhit Mein Jaari, which despite facing a low screen count and heavily reduced ticket prices on Day 1 managed to draw in Rs. 2.19 cr. over its first weekend.
Looking at the day wise collections, the business of Dhaakad started on a low note with Rs. 55 lakhs coming in on Day 1. Subsequently the collections did increase, but by a rather marginal amount to Rs. 59 lakhs and Rs. 82 lakhs on its first Saturday and Sunday respectively. On Day 4 and Day 5, it collected Rs. 18 lakhs and Rs. 16 lakhs respectively taking the five day total to Rs. 2.3 cr.
On the other hand, Janhit Mein Jaari started on a slower note with just Rs. 43 lakhs coming in on Day 1. However, the second and third day in theatres witnessed double the collections coming in with Rs. 82 lakhs and Rs. 94 lakhs being registered. On Day 4 and Day 5, it collected Rs. 31 lakhs and Rs. 31 lakhs respectively taking the five day total to Rs. 2.81 cr.
The interesting part here is the fact that though the latter release featured 75% lesser screens, it has raked on 22% more at the box office when the first 5 days are compared. Also, Janhit Mein Jaari has surpassed the lifetime collections of Dhaakad in just 5 days!
