The month gone by has been an eye-opener, what with a number of small films standing tall despite a substantial chunk of movie-going audience abstaining from watching movies. Even otherwise, the year has seen a slew of low-cost and medium-budget fares leaving an impression at the ticket window, like MITHYA, JANNAT, AAMIR, JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA, PHOONK, ROCK ON!!, A WEDNESDAY and 1920.
A producer is doubly sure of the returns on investment today as compared to the scenario in 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Technological advancements have opened up newer avenues. Plus, the opening of the international markets has only made him more confident of the business.
Can we safely say that small is big today? Sure, but not all low-cost fares or medium-budget films would attract buyers. Even if they do, what's the guarantee that the distributors/studio that has acquired the rights gives it a respectable release? And how sure is anyone of the returns? Box-office is so unpredictable!
Last Friday witnessed the release of two medium-budget films [WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR and SAAS BAHU AUR SENSEX] and one low-cost film [HULLA], but only WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR could survive the test. Check out the Opening Day, Barometer and Midweek reports for the response to the new releases in the initial days.
Now let's talk of business from Monday onwards. Expectedly, WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR also faced a fall on weekdays. WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR has been performing at 20% levels at several plexes, which is okay for a film that doesn't carry the burden of a heavy price tag.
SAAS BAHU AUR SENSEX tanked completely from Monday onwards. The investors are bound to lose a substantial amount for sure. As for HULLA, with its theatrical business hitting rock-bottom, the non-theatrical revenue is its only hope.
