Akshay Kumar has had a glorious 2012. Barring JOKER, which sank without a trace, his innings as an actor [HOUSEFULL 2, ROWDY RATHORE and OMG - OH MY GOD] has been remarkable this year. Naturally, everyone expected KHILADI 786 to be a winner at the BO. The film has behaved exactly the way it was expected to at single screens, but its performance at most multiplexes is a downer. Multiplexes, as we know, contribute a large chunk of revenue, which is missing in this case. What's shocking is that this one had a popular soundtrack as its strong point and the general perception within the industry is Top Star + Hit Music = Terrific start at the ticket window. That wasn't the case here.
KHILADI 786 follows the rules of masala cinema to the T. Yet, a large chunk of the moviegoing audience didn't embrace the film warmly. One of the theories doing the rounds of the industry is that there is an overdose of masala entertainers in the marquee, with KHILADI 786 offering nothing new to the entertainment seeking viewer. A section of the trade is also of the opinion that with DABANGG 2 arriving two weeks later, this one was given a skip by a section of the movie-going audience. Then there are those who feel that too many Akshay movies dilute the charisma of a star.
Irrespective of the reasons offered by the know-alls, KHILADI 786 is not a resounding Flop as some naysayers and pessimists would like you to believe. The film is holding quite well on weekdays, thus consolidating its position at the ticket window. At the same time, it's not a money spinner like Akshay's earlier hits HOUSEFULL 2, ROWDY RATHORE and OMG - OH MY GOD. Yes, it hasn't met those mammoth expectations, but the domestic business, as I see it, should remain steady in the coming days due to the absence of any significant film releasing in the forthcoming week. At single screens mainly... Till DABANGG 2 arrives.
Meanwhile, Khiladi Kumar can look back on 2012 with a smile on his face. Three solid hits, one decent grosser and one flop... The plusses outweigh and outnumber the minusses here.
