Who would've ever imagined a virtual drought of films in March? After YEH FAASLEY, which didn't create any ripples before and after its release, no significant film is slated for release till 1 April. The question that crosses my mind is, what will Hindi movie addicts, who require their weekly dose of new films, do under these circumstances? Another question: How will theatres/plexes cope with lack of releases during the interim period? I mean, films like PATIALA HOUSE and 7 KHOON MAAF have already exhausted their run and the business of TANU WEDS MANU will get exhausted after its third weekend. The only way out for theatres/plexes is to cut down on shows and reduce their costs in the process.
The month of April is flooded with films. Sure, there's IPL to contend with, but why would anyone want to miss out on summer vacations? The April to June period has, most of the times, posted healthy returns as far as film business is concerned and I expect a number of films to fare well in these three months. But what worries me is the number of films slated for release in April. In some weeks, there are 3/4/5 films vying for audience attention. I am sure, the producers/distributors would be wise enough to shift their films to a latter week, although most producers seem adamant as of today.
Will audience throng the theatres on 1 April [GAME and F.A.L.T.U.], after 3 weeks of no-show at cineplexes? Well, there's some buzz for F.A.L.T.U. [the promotions started some time back] and also, one of the songs from the film has already caught on big time amongst the youth. But GAME is yet to create that buzz. This one's a crucial film for Abhishek Bachchan. Solo Abhishek starrers, with the sole exception of GURU, have faced rough weather at the ticket window. DRONA, DELHI 6, RAAVAN and KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY have been unmitigated disasters. Will GAME and DUM MAARO DUM [also slated for April release] resurrect his career?
