Dia Mirza addresses Harvard forum :"Regenerative growth is not a sacrifice; it is an opportunity to build societies that truly thrive"
Actor, producer and UNEP Goodwill Ambassador Dia Mirza addressed students at the Harvard College Project for Asian and International Relations, where she spoke about climate responsibility, gender equity, and the role of storytelling in shaping more sustainable societies.
Dia Mirza addresses Harvard forum :"Regenerative growth is not a sacrifice; it is an opportunity to build societies that truly thrive"
Speaking at the student-led forum hosted at Harvard University, Mirza stressed that climate change should be viewed not only as a policy challenge but also as a shared ethical responsibility across nations, industries, and communities.
“Protecting nature is not optional. It is the most profound offering of love for our children,” she said, underlining the intergenerational impact of environmental choices. She added, “When our economies are designed to restore what we take from the Earth rather than deplete it transformation follows. Health improves. Livelihoods strengthen. Inequality reduces. Regenerative growth is not a sacrifice; it is an opportunity to build societies that truly thrive.”
A major theme of her address was the role of storytelling in driving social change. Mirza spoke about how cinema and media can move audiences from awareness to empathy and action, noting that narratives can help translate scientific realities into human experiences people can connect with.
Drawing from her own work as a producer, she said she consciously supports projects that foreground sustainability and environmental awareness, using film as a way to bridge conversations between science, policy, and everyday life.
Beyond filmmaking, Mirza has also invested in sustainability-focused ventures including Greendigo, Beco, Shumee, Allter, and Without, reflecting her broader focus on responsible consumption and environmentally conscious growth.
Founded in 1991, the Harvard College Project for Asian and International Relations brings together young leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region to engage with policymakers, academics, and public figures on global economic, political, and social questions. At the forum, Mirza’s remarks centred on the idea that meaningful sustainability begins with individual and institutional accountability, supported by narratives capable of inspiring action.
