Five failures in two weeks!

 

I can't fathom this! Last Friday [13 Jan] witnessed the release of as many as four films [CHAALIS CHAURAASI, GHOST, SADDA ADDA and TUTIYA DIL], while the forthcoming Friday [20 Jan] has no film releasing whatsoever. The question is, why were the producers in a tearing hurry to release their films last Friday? GHOST was slated for release in December, but its producers decided to shift the film to January to coincide with the date -- 13 [Friday the 13 is synonymous with horror flicks worldwide]. The producers of CHAALIS CHAURAASI had also announced its arrival date in December. But SADDA ADDA and TUTIYA DIL could've arrived a week later. They've would managed more screens, better shows.

There's no denying that the content is the USP of a film, but the right/appropriate date of release can only prove sone pe suhaaga. That explains why the release calendar is jam-packed with films every single week. And if the release coincides with a festival or holiday, if it happens to be a 4-day/5-day weekend, nothing like it. It can't get better!

 

Brings me back to the new releases. CHAALIS CHAURAASI had the most promising cast amongst new releases last Friday, while GHOST was selling fear to moviegoers. But neither CHAALIS CHAURAASI nor GHOST could manage a spurt in business. The year 2012 had started on a dull note [PLAYERS] and the business fell sharply last Friday [CHAALIS CHAURAASI, GHOST, SADDA ADDA and TUTIYA DIL]. Five failures at the very start of the new year… sad indeed!

 

Does it signify that low cost films or those starring newcomers would find it difficult to stay afloat in the coming days? Well, a lot depends on the content, plus how strong the word of mouth is and of course, how aggressive and effective the marketing strategy is. Let's face it, the flow of Hindi films in 2012 seems unstoppable and not just low cost films, but even biggies will get a limited time period to score at the ticket window. That's the reality!

 

Meanwhile, the countdown has begun for one of the biggest releases of 2012 -- AGNEEPATH. Will 2012 witness its first 100 cr film in AGNEEPATH, only time will tell...
