  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, June 22, 2004 - 13:40 IST

2004 could well be the year that may prove to be the turning point of Vivek Oberoi's film journey. After a not-so-inspiring 2003, Vivek Oberoi struck gold with 'Masti'. Subhash Ghai's magnum opus 'Kisna' is not too far away and 'Kyun ! Ho Gaya Na', which is ready for release is coming in a couple of months. KHGN, directed by debutant Samir Karnik, also brings in the real life 'jodi' of Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi together for the first time and seems promising due to it's theme and fresh treatment. Big B appears in a brand new getup for an extended guest appearance while Shankar Ehsaan Loy, who are vying for the top spot after twin success of 'Kal Ho Na Ho' and 'Lakshya', compose. Javed Akhtar, another regular with the musician duo of Shankar Ehsaan Loy, writes. Produced by Boney Kapoor [who hasn't had a success for a long time now and had a recent blow from below average response of 'Run'], KHGN has been making for some time now and got delayed due to successive accidents of both it's lead stars. Finally the film is set for release and seems to be one film that should be able to give it's producers an elusive Hit !

One thing that catches attention immediately is the album cover, which is unique, smart and impressive. It sets up the mood and one looks forward to some very good music. Opening track 'Pyaar Mein Sau Uljhane Hai' is one such track that is, in true terms, 'different' ! An amazingly composed track, it has excellent musical arrangements, wonderful orchestra, western classical theme, great singing, tremendous chorus and charged up carnival-kind look and feel. A first of it's kinds to have ever hit the Indian screen, the credit goes to the entire team behind the song - the composers, lyricist, singing team of Shankar, Vijay Prakash, Mahalaxmi, Sneha Pant, choreographer and above all the producer and the director who had faith in going the unconventional route and daring to do something which is indeed 'hat ke' !! This is definitely one of the top five songs to have arrived in Bollywood this year.

If 'Pyaar Mein Sau' was a good piece of music then 'No No' goes even a step further in being rhythmic, contemporary and full of appeal for today's youngsters. A hep track sung by a large team of Kunal Ganjawala, Dominique Cerejo, Loy Mendonca, Chetna Shashital and Shankar, it is extremely foot tapping, composed completely as a western track and will definitely do well in the urban centers. A good dash of choreography and it could well be one of the most played songs in this side of the year.

After two roaring tracks in the form of 'Pyaar Mein' and 'No No', 'Aao Na' by Sadhana Sargam and Udit Narayan comes across as another beautiful song. A melodious love song that has smooth lyrics by Javed saab, it brings along an ice cool effect with it that moves you literally and does well in transferring you to a lovey-dovey mood. Sadhana Sargam justifies her selectivity in terms of playback singing while Udit Narayan reaffirms that he is the best when it comes to echoing a lover's heart. Though after three good songs in a row, one's expectations increases manifold from the remaining three songs, 'Aao Na' is enough to go for KHGN.

Shaan and Sunidhi Chauhan make a belated appearance but the wait seems to be for better as 'Main Hoon' is one such track with which nothing can go wrong if presented on screen as well as the song is in itself. A song that should be a rage in coming days, it should set the screen ablaze due to its theme, which is about the war of words between Vivek and Ash. Composed as a racy track that picks up the momentum from the word GO, it is very well complemented by Javed saab's lyrics that catch the nuances of the situation. The only song that somehow follows a conventional route is 'Baat Samjha Karo', a song picturised on the Big B that has Chetan Shashital taking over from Sudesh Bhonsle. A party-time celebration song, it is situational and is co-sung by Shankar Mahadevan and Javed Ali. The number is fine but not as impressive as the previous four tracks.

Shankar Mahadevan does a solo with 'Dheere Dheere' and in fact sings it also quite 'dheere dheere' !! Both in terms of pitch of voice as well as the overall flow of the number, it is quite slow and makes for a quite hearing. After a while, the pitch of the song does rise but the essence of the number isn't lost as it remains romantic throughout. A song that is a decent bet to be played for your loved ones, it adds itself to the list of yet another reasons to go for KHGN.

Music of KHGN is very urban, very contemporary and very classy. Not that it won't be appreciated by the masses, but the class crowds who want a song to sound great in their state-of-art music systems will lap this up in dozens. Shankar Ehsaan Loy make another giant leap in re-defining the music of today's Bollywood and come up trumps yet again. This is a must for your music collection.
