Dhruv Piyush Panjnani - Apna Aasmaan
Around 3 months back, Dhruv enacted the role of a 14 year old boy Buddhi whose character resembled that of Darsheel. A mentally challenged young boy whose interest lied in painting (mere coincidence?) but couldn't gather attention when it came to studies; Dhruv's performance in the film was average. Apna Aasmaan was a serious film about parental aspirations from a child who is unlike others and was a non-starter at the box office.
Darsheel Safary, the boy who plays the central character of ‘Ishaan Awasthi’ in Taare Zameen Par, must have had a task in hand! After all, unlike playing a conventional child character, Darsheel didn't quite have many references points up his sleeves. If promos are any indication, Darsheel is a winner in hands! In the recent times, Darsheel had number of actors for company ranging from Javed Jaffrey to Hrithik Roshan to Raima Sen who were differently abled! Let's have a look.
Darsheel Safary - Taare Zameen Par
Darsheel plays the character of Ishaan, an 8 year old, dyslexic boy. A ‘bindaas’ kid, his interest lies in drawing, painting and playing but ignores homework, takes no efforts to get good marks in exams and his room is a perpetual garbage bin. Give him colors and he will be the happiest kid alive but talk about getting into a boarding school and he would protest!
Javed Jaffrey's act in Dhamaal came as a pleasant surprise. A take off on Hrithik from Koi Mil Gaya, Javed was a riot as a ‘30 something man’ who had a mind of a 10 year old. Since Dhaamal was an Indra Kumar enterprise, as expected there was no 'rona-dhona' or feeling pity around Javed's ‘boy-man’ character. Instead, this was projected as one of the many selling points of the film with Javed coming up with an impeccable body language, mannerisms and accent of a kid. No wonder, he was the best part about the film and a true hero. Indra Kumar hit gold after a poor Pyaare Mohan and talks are already on for a sequel.
Wish one sees more of Raima Sen. She has made her presence felt this year in films like Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd, Yatra and Manorama - Six Feet Under but it was Eklavya - The Royal Guard which made everyone sit up and take notice of her at the beginning of the year itself. As Nandini, a mentally challenged Princess who is the lone witness to the murder of her mother in the hands of her father, she was impressive in those 4-5 scenes, which she enacted. Just like Ishaan (Taare Zameen Par) and Buddhi (Apna Aasmaan), even Nandini's interest lies in, what else but, painting! The only difference here is that her painting was colored with murder! The film was a disappointment at the box office though Raima may just get a chance to walk the red market if Eklavya - The Royal Guard covers some distance in the Oscars.
More than 4 years back, Hrithik Roshan made a smashing comeback in a role which always feared carrying a high risk quotient. Walking against the tide, he played the role of Rohit Mehra, a mentally challenged young man whose body was growing faster than his mind. Reportedly, Hrithik locked himself up in his room for days to get the mannerisms right for this role which was nothing short of a ‘make or break’ project for him due to an extended poor run at the box office. The gamble paid off and the rest, as they say, is history. Hrithik got into the skin of the character in such a manner that 20 minutes into the film and it was hard to imagine that he was the same man who had appeared in films like Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and Lakshya.
