If 2007 saw a spate of comedies doing wonders at the Box Office; expect a different outing in 2008. So far, the year has opened on a lukewarm note with neither comedy (Sunday, Bombay To Bangkok, Rama Rama Kya Hai Dramaaa) nor drama (Halla Bol,) doing any wonders at the ticket counters. However, the future looks bright with films belonging to varied genres aiming for a kill as they arrive in quick succession.
Action
It's time for some 'Dhoom 3' and a lot more as Abbas Mustan turn to some serious action with Race. A high adrenalin ride which comes with actors jumping from 20 floors, fast moving cars tumbling on highways, aerial stunts being the order of the day and one lover boy (Saif Ali Khan) getting an image makeover, Race is already carrying great reports. With hot bods like Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy going all out to soar the temperatures, Race is creating some heat already en route to it's 21st March release.
Meanwhile, Yash Raj Films who started it all with Dhoom have yet another 'masala' action film, Tashan, ready for release. Though Saif Ali Khan is the common factor between Tashan and Race, presence of a certain Akshay Kumar has further made a bigger difference to the prospects of this first Yash Raj release of 2008. The production house is looking for a successful Box Office outing, especially after no-show of Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Aaja Nachle. Tashan seems to be a definite shot in the arm as it arrives on April 25. - Comedy Comedies would continue to stay in business. Comedies would continue to stay in business. Directed by debutant Ashwani Dheer who has made people laugh for years with his sitcom 'Office Office' on the small screen, One Two Three releasing on 28th March is a comedy of errors which is centered on three main characters around whom the story revolves - Sunil Shetty, Paresh Rawal and Tusshar Kapoor. Each of the three men is named Lakshmi Narayan in the film and this is what brings the entire confusion in the plot.
Arriving on April 11, Krazzy 4 goes one-step further and has four crazy men in the cast, which includes Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Rajpal Yadav, and Suresh Menon. Jaideep Sen makes his debut as a director in this film where Juhi Chawla plays a psychiatrist who is in charge of treatment for Krazzy 4. The film is all set to be a laugh riot if initial promos of the film are any indications. - Romance Who says romance is only for teenagers? Who says romance is only for teenagers? Get set to witness a mature love story as Ajay Devgan and Kajol come together to relive the nostalgia of Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha which arrived close to a decade back. This time around, their journey traverses from falling in love to getting married and discovering life and love in years to follow. With Ajay Devgan himself wielding the megaphone to call the shots in his home production and some great tunes by Vishal Bhardwaj to boast, U Me Aur Hum is creating good expectations before its April 11 release. - Drama Combination of Bhatts and Emraan Hashmi mandates a dramatic outing. Combination of Bhatts and Emraan Hashmi mandates a dramatic outing. Remember Murder, Zeher, Kalyug, Gangster, and Awarapan? Now Jannat arriving in the month of May only follows the trend and aims at telling a shocking tale as it unveils the dark world of betting and match fixing in the game of cricket. A few feathers are bound to be unruffled in this Kunal Deshmukh debut offering which also marks the debut of model Sonal Chauhan. Music by Pritam is only going to be an added bonus.
Nagesh Kukunoor has been most effective when he has handled dramatic subjects. Iqbal, Dor and Teen Deewarein are just a few examples to cite. Never mind an odd Bombay To Bangkok, we would still wait for the month of May which would see Nagesh pairing up with John Abraham for Aashayein. A story of a compulsive gambler (Abraham) who discovers new meanings of fortune and life through some dramatic turn of events, Aashayein also stars Kukunoor's regular Shreyas Talpade in a special appearance.
