Congrats on your new EP I Like The Way! The songs are pretty catchy. Thank you for a wonderful music album. What are the fan reactions to the EP so far? What do the fans have to say?
I think it was good because I saw some comments, “Oh, Woojin, this hairstyle and outfit and music genre, everything is good!” So, I was satisfied.
How are you feeling about the album and the amount of love that it has received?
I feel comfortable because I prepare a lot of things recording and taking a picture and music video. It was a pretty tough time. But now really comfortable and I'm really happy now.
What was your creative process when you were working on the EP? What was your inspiration and how did the EP come to a completion?
Earlier, I focused on what kind of music the public would like to hear, but this album is my personal story. Let's talk comfortably. I focused on delivering my story. The process was really fun for me, but in a way, it was too personal. I was worried if I could go this far. Because I've never talked about this in my previous album. That is how it came to be.
You said it's your story that you're trying to narrate in this EP. So, is there any TMI that you can share with us? Is there any interesting, funny or unexpected incident?
It's not that special, but I always get hurt when I shoot for a music video. The first music video, for example, ‘Still Dream’. I scratched my wrist. [For] this last album I like the way I did the bass, so again I hurt my fingers.
Please be careful while shooting your music videos! In the past, you've mentioned that you want to try something with the rock genre or something on the heavier side. Is there any other genre that you would like to try?
Actually, I tried a new genre in this album, which is Afrobeat. I felt nervous because it was my first time doing Afrobeat. But when I recorded that song, I felt that it suited me. But yeah, I also want to do the rock genre. Nobody knows!
Nobody knows indeed! When you're writing a song, what is your process like? Do you write the melody first or the lyrics? Can you walk us through your songwriting process?
Except for this album, usually when I make a song, I start to make the melody. And after I finish the melody, I write the lyrics.
Where do you find the inspiration to make music from?
CUBS and me. It is that simple. What I want to say or what they want is my inspiration.
How do you overcome your writer's block? What strategies or techniques do you use?
I just take a rest! I think it's best. When you feel you are stuck, just take a break and come back to it later with a fresh mind.
Kim Woo Jin as an actor and Kim Woo Jin as a singer, what is the difference between these two personas? Do you have a different approach when it comes to acting? How do you prepare for your role?
It is a lot different. When it comes to acting, I have to catch up quickly, and have a lot more posture to learn. On the other hand, when I do music, I think it's different because I to try to do better through the experience I've had so far. That’s the difference between these two personas.
What is your process like when preparing for a role? Do you have any rituals that you go through?
My acting coach said you have to throw the script away and just not look at it. And the most important thing is to remember if I was that character, what kind of emotions, what kind of words would he have wanted to say? I think that is important to know.
Q: Do you have any memorable incidents from your drama Beyond the Wardrobe?
There were a lot of things because I paid a lot of attention to the acting part. Among them, the most memorable thing was that there was a scene where we had to eat spicy food, but the food wasn't spicy at all. But I had to act like it was spicy, and I did it. I think it came out well, so I'm satisfied. Also, the music video we shot in Brazil? I think it was really fun.
If you had to choose the next role, what would you choose? Like what character would you like to play next if you were given a chance to choose?
I want to try a lot of characters, but I want to try the most is the one which is really kind. I want to play a character who wants to protect a loved one.
Now, let's take a fun spin. What fun activities do you do when you're not working? How do you rewind and recharge?
Yeah, there's a two-way method. I have two ways. The first one is to travel. The second one is to eat delicious food. It's my small happiness.
Of all your songs so far, which song do you like the most personally and why?
‘Growing Pains’ is my favourite song because I like the tempo, the melody and just all of it.
Suppose somebody is listening to you for the first time, how will you describe your music to them?
‘Refeshing’ and ‘a good voice.’ I think those are my strengths and my charms.
If you have the chance to come back to India, which activities or which cities would you like to visit in India?
I want to go to New Delhi once more. I have a great time in all the cities. But yeah, I want to go to New Delhi. I have good memories in Mumbai too.
Can you give us a spoiler for your next activity for the year?
It’s going to be a concept with mature feelings and songs.
What message do you have for CUBS (fandom name) in India?
I recently visited India for the second time. I am thankful for your love and support. I hope to have an enjoyable time with you all on my next visit to India. Until then, please wait for me! Love you, CUBS!
