Penn, known for his work in Harold & Kumar and The Namesake, took to Instagram to share a picture with Rani from the festivities. Captioning the post, he wrote, “Sabyasachi Diwali Reception. Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York City. The best @sabyasachiofficial @metmuseum @manav_angelo_kashyap.”

Rani, who shares a longstanding association with Sabyasachi and is considered part of his inner circle, made a statement in contemporary festive wear. The actress chose a fluid, liquid-grey satin saree with a lustrous finish, paired with a matching sleeveless blouse featuring a plunging V-neckline. Moving away from heavily embroidered traditional occasion wear, she kept the look understated while adding distinctive accessories.

Black, thick-rimmed square glasses lent an intellectual edge to the ensemble, while a silver-embellished mini chain bag added a touch of sparkle. Subtle jewellery completed her look, balancing modern styling with the elegance of a saree.

Designer and entrepreneur Masaba Gupta was also among the guests. She wore a contemporary draped white skirt-saree featuring a traditional red border, teamed with a structured white corset top. A multicoloured statement necklace and a maroon Sabyasachi clutch rounded off her outfit. Entrepreneur Anjula Acharia was also spotted at the gathering.

Sabyasachi kept his own look classic, opting for a black bandhgala jacket with ivory trousers and a playful pop of colour through bright pink socks.

The reception transformed The Met into a festive setting inspired by the designer’s signature aesthetic. Floral installations, cascading pomegranates, autumnal colours, a peacock display and an elaborate grazing table formed part of the decor, bringing Indian festive motifs into the iconic New York venue.

The event comes amid Sabyasachi’s continued presence in the international fashion scene, following the expansion of his flagship boutique in New York and his recent return to New York Fashion Week. With Rani Mukerji, Kal Penn, Masaba Gupta and other guests in attendance, the Diwali reception brought together Indian celebrity culture, fashion and heritage on a global platform.
