The much talked about and keenly anticipated Aamir Khan starrer Laal Singh Chaddha was released yesterday. Directed by Advait Chandan the film which also features Kareena Kapoor Khan was expected to open on a good note. However, contrary to expectations the film which is a remake of the Tom Hanks starrer Forrest Gump started off on a sluggish note. In fact, reports suggested that Laal Sinch Chaddha witnessed a 15% occupancy rate over the morning and early afternoon shows on Day 1. If that wasn’t enough, compounding issues further were the lackluster reviews the film received.
In this box office report, we look at the opening day collections of Laal Singh Chaddha while comparing the same to Aamir Khan’s previous releases. Collecting Rs. 12 cr on opening day Laal Singh Chaddha has failed to surpass Aamir’s previous releases like Talaash and 3 Idiots which collected Rs. 13.50 cr and Rs. 12.78 cr respectively. Besides these two films, Laal Singh Chaddha has also failed to out beat the actor’s other releases like Thugs of Hindostan which collected Rs. 52.25 cr, Dhoom 3 which collected Rs. 36.22 cr, Dangal which collected Rs. 29.78 cr, and PK which had collected Rs. 26.63 cr. On the other hand, Laal Singh Chaddha does manage to surpass some of Aamir Khan’s other films like Secret Superstar which collected Rs. 4.80 cr, Fanaa which collected Rs. 3.96 cr, and Mangal Pandey - The Rising which collected Rs. 3.24 cr.
Currently, Laal Singh Chaddha is facing massive issues at the box office, with audiences opting to keep away from theatres; the film has seen shows being canceled due to non-occupancy. In fact, on its second day running reports claim that Laal Singh Chaddha has seen a massive drop in occupancy, which is being attributed to the fact that the film faces competition from the other release Raksha Bandhan and the fact that it has received less than appreciative reviews.
Despite this though, trade predictions remain optimistic, stating that with the festive extended weekend and the Independence Day holiday on Monday the collections of Laal Singh Chaddha will see an increase. However, as a cautionary, industry reports indicate that the increase in business will be rather marginal.
