Sunny Deol starrer Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, which was directed by Anil Sharma, became a historic blockbuster when it was released back in 2001. The movie earned over Rs 75 crores, an amount which was unthinkable over 20 years ago. Plus, the film achieved this despite its clash with another successful and highly acclaimed Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India, which starred Aamir Khan in the lead.
Now, 22 years later, the sequel to Gadar in the form of Gadar 2 arrived last week. And even after over two decades, the second part of the movie literally took the box office by storm as it opened with a mammoth number of Rs. 40.10 crores and continued its momentum the next day and made Rs. 43.08 crores. Now on its third day running the film has managed to collect a further Rs. 51.70 cr. Taking its total three day collection to Rs. 134.88 cr.
This makes Sunny Deol the oldest main lead or hero to make an entry into the Rs. 100 Crore Club at the age of 65. Although there was anticipation for Gadar 2 when it was announced two years ago, not many would have expected it to shatter the box office like it has. Interestingly, Sunny’s second highest score at the box office is Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.
Sunny made his big screen debut with Rahul Rawail’s Betaab in 1983 and has so far acted in around 100 movies.
Produced by Zee Studios and Anil Sharma Productions, Gadar 2 also stars Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma in lead roles.
