It was predicted in this column earlier this week that Mom would open around the Rs. 3 crore mark. This is what actually happened too as the Sridevi saw the first day numbers of Rs. 2.90 crore. The film was always set to be a slow starter and then show improvement in the evening and night shows. It followed the same trajectory with footfalls improving as the shows progressed, courtesy growth in the urban centres. The film has got decent to very good reviews coming its way and the word of mouth has been on the same lines as well, which would further help its case.
The film is expected to grow reasonably well over the weekend though one doesn’t really foresee a jump on the same lines as last year Pink which had seen an opening day of Rs. 4.32 crore and then went on to enjoy a weekend of Rs. 21.5 crore. In fact it would be more on the lines of No One Killed Jessica which had started with Rs. 3.5 crore coming on the first day and then Rs. 14 crore been accumulated over the weekend.
Other release of the week, Guest Iin London, has opened on expected lines too. In the minimal case scenario one expected Day One to be around Rs. 2 crore mark. This is what happened as Rs. 2.10 crore came in. That said, if one compares this to Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge which had opened at Rs. 3 crore, you get the picture. The film got some decent showcasing in theaters. However, there is competition from Mom as well as Hollywood release Spider-Man: Homecoming which needs to be handled. The reviews haven’t been good either and the word of mouth is scattered too. Hence, its an uphill task ahead for the film.
