2023 has ended and as we set foot into 2024, which holds promise for big-screen releases, Bollywood Hungama takes a look back at some of the releases of 2023 that made an impact. However, unlike conventional box office reports, we look at films from the standpoint of Aamir Khan’s box office formula to understand which of the releases were highly successful.
For the uninitiated, back in 2013 the Aamir Khan starrer Dhoom 3 hit screens, while the film itself went on to create box office collection records, Aamir had come up with a different theory to gauge a film’s success. According to Aamir Khan, “To measure a film’s success, you need to see the weekend figures and compare it with the total collection. Like 3 Idiots did Rs. 40 crores on the weekend and the total business was Rs. 202 crores, so the weekend multiplied by 5, is the behaviour of the film which is very good. That shows people have gone again and again to see the film. Jo film teen din mein 100 crore karein aur total mein 200 crore karein, then that film is not good.”
In this report while comparing the quality of movies, we introduced a Metric – Weekend to Lifetime Multiple for the 100 crore club. According to this comparison, a higher multiple indicates strong content and therefore longevity at cinemas, which in turn signifies footfalls being attracted in subsequent weeks.
Taking the top slot with the highest weekend-to-lifetime multiple is the Vidhu Vinod Chopra film 12th Fail starring Vikrant Massey. With a multiple of 8.09 the film has emerged as the most successful release of 2023. Following closely behind are releases like The Kerala Story with a multiple of 6.82. Rounding up the top 5 films with the highest weekend to lifetime multiple are Zara Hatke Zara Bachke and Gadar 2 which feature a multiple of 3.90 each.
Not surprisingly, big ticket releases like Sam Bahadur 3.84, OMG 2 3.48, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani 3.35, Salaar 2.80 and Animal 2.75, make it to the Top 10 film with the highest weekend to lifetime multiple. However, unlike the previous releases, the biggest grossers of the year viz. the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jawan features 12th on the list with a multiple of 2.25 while Pathaan manages a multiple of 1.93.
