Chhodon Naa Yaar Review {2.0/5} & Review Rating
Jimmy Sheirgill's films continue to make their presence felt. While Victoria No. 203 releases this weekend, promotion of his upcoming release Chhodon Naa Yaar has also begun. Produced by Sameer Gaikwad (who was also the co-producer of award winning Marathi feature film 'Dombivali Fast), the film marks the directorial debut of Dilip Sood.
Touted to be an adventure thriller, 'Chhodon Naa Yaar' stars Kabir Sadanand and Farid Amri along with Kim Sharma as the female lead. One doesn't really know what to expect though from the soundtrack of this film that has lyrics by Panchhi Jalonvi and music by Anand Raj Anand. Nevertheless, what one gets in the end too is hardly a soundtrack that would be remembered in the coming weeks.
It's an unconventional beginning for the album as Anand Raj Anand himself comes behind the mike for 'Kasak'. A song about being together in leave, the track has a serene feel to it as it recreates 'pahadi' surroundings. The sound of flute is prominent throughout the song's 4 minute duration while the usage of musical instruments too is just apt with no western influences whatsoever. Even the 'remix version' which comes after a while doesn't dilute the melodious feel of the song and only aids in pepping up the song a little.
Will Jimmy Sheirgill get his 'Kajrare with 'Talwar Le'? This is the question which comes to mind as one hears the track that is absolutely catchy in the very first hearing. Rendered by Deler Mehendi who sings this 'desi' track in a spirited tone, 'Talwar Re...Tere Kajre Ki Dhaar Re' has Sunidhi Chauhan joining him in all the fun. With an Anand Raaj Anand stamp to it, this item number has good beats and support from chorus which makes it an enjoyable outing.
This is the reason why the music company also seems to feel confident about the song and presents it in two more 'remix versions'. First to come is the one that has a heavy dose of English lyrics incorporated into the tune. In fact as one moves further into the song, one realizes that Anand Raaj Anand has himself sung a substantial portion of the song in English with lyrics that go as 'You Freak My Mind'.
The second remix, 'Dhol remix', is justified in it's inclusion in the album as it suits the genre of the song. With extended beats and the bhangra feel to it given with an added chorus, this is the version that should make for the marriage and other celebrations.
Medicority comes into play though with the arrival of 'Jhoom Le' which sounds nothing better than one of those routine remix versions of yesteryears' hits. Rendered by Sunidhi Chauhan who for a change does not add much to an anyways average tune, 'Jhoom Le' is boring to the core in spite of heavy duty musical arrangements with an attempt at creating a foot tapping rhythm. The result is hardly enticing though as the song falls flat with no sight of pick up at all.
To go with the adventure mood of the film with focus on youth, 'Zindagi' is a situational rock based track which is as average as it gets. The beats just do not excite while rendition by Shaan too is highly inspiring enough to make you stand up and take notice of the song. Anand Raaj Anand adds a slight North India touch to primarily rock setting of the song but what you get in the end is a tune that sounds just like one of those countless campus tracks. Sadly, this 'Zindagi' hardly has any life!
The finale isn't any exciting either with the build up of 'Luta Hai Zamana Ne' not leading a listener to a kind of crescendo that would otherwise have been expected from a 'qawalli' track like this. Rendered by Sukhwinder Singh it just moves on at a constant (slow) pace without any major highs in it which could make it an entertaining piece. Yet another average track.
Chhodon Naa Yaar starts off on an impressive note with 'Talvar Le' getting the house on while 'Kasak' bearing a class to it. Unfortunately, 'Jhoom Le' is just bad which takes the album many steps back while 'Zindagi' doesn't have much worth associated to it too. 'Luta Hai Zamana Ne' does make an attempt but still isn't good enough to make Chhodon Naa Yaar a must buy.
